p r o s p e r i t y
These images are the result of some personal work I made over the
course of the summer of 2000 in the area of Cleveland, Ohio.
I attended various weekend "Home Days" celebrations, rib cook-offs,
baseball and softball games, fairs, tailgate parties, and polka festivals.
The impetus of this work was to create a record of a rare period of
"unprecedented economic prosperity" but from the perspective of free-
admisson, open-to-the-public events. As the US has served as a model
for prosperity production for the citizens of other countries, my
intention was to attempt to view Americans with the eyes of someone
from outside this culture.
I chose to work in black and white for a variety or reasons, the
foremost was to create a durable archive of the epoch, another was to
not spend so much money to shoot so aimlessly.
